DROPPY EYE LID (LID PTOSIS)
Dropping of upper eyelids occurs due to weakness of the muscle responsible for elevating the eye lids (the levator muscle) and this may be either congenital from the first months of birth or acquired through life
Congenital droppy eyes(upper lid ptosis):It occurs since birth or first months in life ,it may be unilateral in one eye or bilateral in both eyes
Acquired droppy eyes(lid ptosis)
It occurs throughout life due to many factors :
– 3rd nerve palsy which causes paralysis or weakness of the levator muscle
– Muscle injury from trauma or surgery
– Generalized muscles weakness diseases like myasthenia Gravis
– Senile ptosis which occurs with aging due to stretching and aging of the muscle
Complications of droppy eyes or lid ptosis:
1-Dimiution of vision in the affected eye as the brain considers it non-functioning eye which leads to eyesight problems especially Astigmatism and Ambylopia
2-Pschychological problems from the bullying and feeling being different from others
Correction of droppyeyelids (ptosis)
Is mainly surgical and depends on the power of the elevating muscle of the eye lids (levator muscle) and amount of weakness,
Which is measured precisely by different techniques and graded from mild ,moderate and severe affection.
In most cases of mild and moderate affection surgery depends on strengthing the elevating muscle but in severe muscle weakness ,surgical correction depends on the use of forehead muscle (frontalis muscle) as a helping muscle in elevating the eyelids, and this surgical techniques needs highly qualified doctor who knows how to choose the correct technique to give beautiful results and symmetry between the two eyes
